Sandy Van Laningham

Co-Founder / Teacher

Sandy Van Laningham has been teaching at Twelve Tone Music School since 2019, but has been a musician her whole life. Initially learning clarinet and piano as a kid, she learned how to sing the rest was history! After high school, someone said she had to choose a “career” so naturally music school was the best option. Tackling a vocal performance degree at Columbia College Chicago, she graduated with all of the necessary rockstar skills in performing and songwriting. With piano and voice as her primary instrument, she picked up ukulele, drums, percussion, keytar, and a little bit of accordion.

In her post-college years, Sandy attended the Second City Training Center, learning improv, musical direction for improv, and voiceover, further honing in on all of her weird abilities. Currently Sandy is in a folk rock band called The Devilish Winks, with two full length recorded albums out in the wild, playing locally in Chicago for the last 10 years. In her downtime she’s taken on collaborative projects composing music for short films, writing lyrics for other artists, and generally taking on any artsy work that comes her way. Be on the lookout: her solo album project Wurlitzer Sandy is underway and due to be released in 2023!
